Miami's Liposuction Specialists Offer Wide Variety of Options For All Body Types

What is Liposuction?

As you have probably been aware, liposuction has received enormous publicity over the past few years. It seems as though everyone from celebrities to the next door neighbor has undergone some form of this procedure. What makes it so popular and for that matter, what exactly is this magic fat melting technique?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes unwanted fatty deposits from various parts of the body including face and neck, upper arms, trunk, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles.

Although the effects are often dramatic, liposuction is not a substitute for healthy eating and exercise. Instead, the surgeon can remove localized areas of fatty tissue that stubbornly refuse to budge. For a more comprehensive result, you can choose to combine liposuction with additional procedures such as facelifts and thigh lifts.

The Three Types of Liposuction

When deciding to have liposuction you can choose between three kinds of the technique:

  • suction-assisted lipectomy
  • ultrasonic-assisted lipectomy, and
  • tumescent liposuction.

When you consult with your surgeon you can discuss the benefits and risks of each form of the procedure to best determine which technique will give you the most effective results.

During suction-assisted lipectomy a special tool called a cannula is inserted into the fatty tissue and moved back and forth. The cannula is a hollow tube that is attached to a vacuum. The vacuum sucks the fat out of the area where the cannula is inserted.

During an ultrasonic lipectomy a special cannula is used that utilizes ultrasonic energy to break down the fatty deposits.

A tumescent lipectomy is ideal for someone wishing to experience as little discomfort as possible because this technique includes a dilute local anesthetic that is inserted into the fatty deposits.

Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Well, that depends. If you are of relatively normal weight but have a few areas of excess body fat, have firm and elastic skin, and do not expect major contouring changes than you will most likely achieve wonderful results. However, if you are expecting to drop 100 pounds or completely makeover your physique you will be sorely disappointed with liposuction.

A frank discussion with your surgeon will allow you both to ask and answer questions regarding your health status, expectations and realistic goals so that you can get the most out of your surgery.

Are There Risks for This Procedure?

All surgery has risk factors but the majority of patients who undergo liposuction do not experience severe complications. Knowing what to expect and having a healthy body before surgery will improve your chances of a successful experience. Your doctor will tell you what specific risks you might experience. Each person is different so the risks are not necessarily the same for everyone.

    What is the Recovery Time?

Many patients can resume normal activity after two days; though if you have several areas treated you might be out of commission for up to a week. It all depends on how your body responds to the surgical impact.
