Options for the aging face - Botox & Volume Replacement
Will Richardson, MD, PA Fort Lauderdale, FL
The most common areas of concern addressed in my office are the lines around the eyes, between the eyes, around the lips and on the forehead. Botox can be used in these areas to reduce the movement of these muscles. By reducing the activity of these muscles, we remove the lines they create. When done properly, the pain should be minimal. At the end of the Botox session, which will take about 20 minutes, you will have minimal redness— although certain individuals may get a small bruise that will resolve over two weeks. 87 percent of individuals notice the improvement within two days with the remainder responding in two weeks. In a study by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, individuals who undergo Botox are perceived as more pleasant and happy individuals. Botox should only be injected by a Board Certified Dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon with experience in an office setting, who can also inform you on any possible side effects or risk factors involved. Volume replacement is performed with both permanent and temporary fillers. Juvederm, Restylane, Cosmoderm, Cosmoplast, Zyderm and Zyplast are all FDA approved temporary fillers that last from three months with Cosmoderm to nine to twelve months with Restylane. In my office, I prefer to use Restylane Fine Lines to correct fine lines on the face, Restylane to perform cheek folds and lip contouring and Restylane SubQ to correct deep volume loss in the cheek. Permanent fillers include Silikon 1000, Sculptra and Radiesse. These are compounds that permanently stimulate the production of collagen. It is extremely important to make sure that the physician is an experienced injector. Once permanent fillers are placed, they can’t be taken out. The injections should take about 30 minutes to perform with minimal discomfort that can be prevented as noted above and minimal redness. Some individuals may experience bruising that will resolve within two weeks. The results are immediate and impressive.
